I heard to talk to Jesus
One year ago today
Even with your dying breath
There was still a lot to say
Though you did not wish to leave
Jesus had called you home
Your body unable to respond
But your soul was free to roam
Speech had been robbed from you
Words we no longer understood
But you carried on a conversation
With the only One who could
I heard you talk to Jesus
His name spoken so clear
A light to warm your bedside
To cut through grief so drear
Did you ask Him questions
To which only angels can attest?
Did you have one final prayer
Before you took your final rest?
Did you protest your time had come
And argue with the Son
About going gently into the night,
About your work being done?
Or did you ask Him to bless
Those you had to leave behind?
To give us strength in days to come
When tears our eyes would blind?
I heard you talk to Jesus
As the night began to wane
Your mumbles a meditation
As you rose above your pain
I wonder what He said
That comforted you so
Were the angels singing a welcome
As Heaven’s light began to glow?
Did you thank Him for your life
For the joy and tears and love?
Were your words a song of praise
As you glimpsed your home above?
Those words we’ll never know
For then your soul took flight
We only know you were not alone
For you talked with Jesus that night
I needed your mama – my friend, Nancy really bad last night – not remembering it had been a year since we talked. Nancy was the one I always called when I needed.to talk – cry we would together till she made me laugh – her beautiful sweet loving life laugh. So many times she turned my mood around – I love her as she said forever and a day.
